Shortwave Listeners Log (SWL Log) is a PC based logging system to help you
maintain the records of your adventures with your radio(s).
It was after
trying the available logging software, both free and commercial, which is
available on the web. And finding it wanting as far as
the SWL was concerned.
It either was so bloated with features and options which 96% of the SWLs out
there would never need or use.
Or it was so poorly coded that it took
excessive amounts of time just to enter a single log record. Or it was some
holdover from DOS! Only 20+ years out of date.
I decided to write this application for myself personally and am offering it to the SWL community as a totally free application. (Note: Not open source)
You will notice if you have been in the hobby for an appreciable length of
time that the form tends to follow the old Gilfer & Associates paper log
sheet design.
I bought a pad of these from Gilfers way back in the 70's and
before I ran out I made sure to make a copy in PhotoShop so I could run off more
sheets as
I needed them. I am glad I did since Gilfers has long since gone
out of business and I haven't seen anything to replace them.
Yes I do keep a running paper log even when using PC based logging systems.
This software does not require any database additions nor do you have to do
any wild contortions to get the software to work.
What it does is quickly,
accurately and seamlessly record your logs, archive your logs and allow you to
listen to the radio...Not screw with the computer.
It has been designed to
run on any XP+ based 32 bit Windows PC. It may run on a 64bit system and may run
on Windows 7 but it has not been tested on those systems.
The main interface is particularly suited to run on a laptop. A 1024x768 resolution display will hold all of the interface so you can get to all the controls.
It will optionally shrink the interface to a 800x600 size so smaller resolutions can also use it. Of course it also runs nicely on higher resolution displays.
This software is being continually updated and revised so check the SWL Log
website often for the latest version.
Versioning follows the fairly standard
form of Major.Minor.Release.Build
What this software will do:
Allow you to keep a clear concise operating log of all your SWL
activities.
Maintain unlimited backups of all your logging efforts. You
decide how many and what to keep.
Create and print your logs to paper. Or
export them to an Excel or PDF file.
Keep your computers time correct to
international time standards from within the application.
Compose EMail based
reception reports and allow you to send them to the stations you hear.
Plot
your contacts on the internal world map. And print the map.
What this software will not do:
It will not operate any radio apparatus from within the application.
It
will not publish your logs to the internet or your neighbor down the
street.
It will not tax the resources of your computer with unnecessary or
poorly coded functions or requirements.
It will not get in your way of
enjoying your radio and the SWL hobby.
