Fifty years ago in 1958, the community of Washington was in desperate need of a publication that would provide news coverage of timely events for readers and a vehicle for distributing advertising from area businesses - and the Washington Courier was "born"! The Washington Courier was one of the first free newspapers distributed in Illinois. Roger Hagel joined the staff shortly thereafter and the newspaper is now one of the Hagel Publications Inc. newspapers. Washington, Illinois has grown a great deal since 1958. The community has seen much growth in population and offers an excellent school system. A "state of the art" facility "Five Points; opened to the public during the fall of 2007, allowing five different entities to be housed under one roof. Many new homes have been constructed over the past few years and many new stores have opened in the city.
