Nn3 Locomotives

My current roster is comprised of the following locomotives;

         D&RG #105   This one is an 0-6-0 saddle tank kit from Republic Locomotive Works and is built over a Marklin 8800 chassis. RLW recommends this as a good first locomotive. It's an easy to do conversion and makes a nice switching loco. I plan to add constant lighting and convert it to a five pole marklin mechanism in the future.

         D&RGW #458 This is the pride of the fleet. A 2-8-2 K-27 "mudhen" locomotive, with it's outside frame and counterweights, it's a real sight running down the rails. This locomotive is a brass unit made by LOK-14 and imported by Tex-N-Rails. It has an 8 volt faulhauber coreless motor and a brass flywheel. It's low speed performance has to be seen to be believed. I added cab curtains and weathered it. I added an etched stainless steel shovel from RLW to the side of the tender. It is hanging on a stainless steel hook and can be removed when needed. (gotta fill that n-scale firebox somehow!)

          C&S #10 What's a Colorado and Southern loco doing in the midst of a D&RG roster? It's simply a nice looking little locomotive! This one is sold by Micro-Trains and is a brass casting over a Marklin chassis. The tender is too small and the loco is slightly oversize. This combination is still acceptable for all but the biggest picker of nits. The 2-6-0 runs pretty stiff right out of the box and requires ALOT of break-in running. I also lightened the tension on the brushes and put a small drop of clipper oil on the backs of the flanges to improve electrical contact with the pickups. I plan to build a new tender for this unit, add tender pickup and constant lighting.

          2-6-0 #1  This little loco will be the new switcher for the "Diggitup Mining Co.". I built the superstructure using an RLW C-16 etched brass cab and brass tube for the boiler. A hand embossed boiler wrapper was built from .003" brass sheet and soldered on. This brass "shell" was then mounted on a Marklin 8895 chassis. It's  lack of weight will limit it to three or four cars so switching with it will be a challenge. It'll get tender pickup to help offset the lack of downforce.

         Climax #7 This is the workhorse of the layout, hauling fresh cut timber out of the hills and down to the sawmill. This class 'A' is made from the seventh(and first successful) casting out of alumilite. It's made to fit over a MicroTrains z-scale F-7. I built the prototype and master from styrene and used the rtv from the alumilite kit to make the molds. It's comprised of the main body casting, the step castings, the sideframe castings, and the truck retainer castings. The rest of the parts used were commercial white metal castings from various manufactures. This locomotive took second place in the steam locomotive catagory at the National N-scale Convention held in San Jose, California this past August(2000). It is now being tooled up as a kit and should be available next year from Republic Locomotive Works.

         Shay #4  The RLW shay conversion kit is the starting point for this locomotive. It also uses the MicroTrains z-scale F-7, but only the internals. This shay was built in 1993 and was rebuilt again in 1999. I made new shafts and universals from bits of brass and pinned them to the truck sideframe castings. These shafts are telescoping and work well on outside corners. They bind hard on tight inside corners and derail the locomotive. Back to the shops for #4!!!

        K-37 #494

        RGS #20

        RGS #22

        K-27 #463 This locomotive will be built up from the GHQ K-27 kit that was sold by Republic Locomotive Works and was recently discontinued. This should be a well documented and involved kit buildup that should stretch well into 2002.....stay tuned.......

       RGS C-16 This kit was sent to me by John Engbers. In a fit of insanity, I must have decided that I didn't have enough projects started and needed more!!....This tiny loco was just too tempting to resist.....have a look!!

The following are locomotives that I have assembled for others;

      J&LW #2 This is a Republic Locomotive Works 2-6-0 mogul kit I'm assembling for Michael Collins and his Jupiter & Lake Worth railroad. Check in often to follow the progress of this project.

      SS&SR #11  The Surry, Sussex & Southhampton Railway Locomotive number 11, or more acurately, how to work for fifty cents an hour!! A challenge issued by Ted McCormack.

This fine K-28 is one that Achim had brought to St. Louis for the 2001 NTS.....

      Aspen Model K-28  This beautiful brass locomotive was on display at the 2001 National Train Show in St. Louis, Missouri. If you want to haul the varnish, this one is the one to do it with!!!
